Happy Birthday Dixie Pieces...

I found this ad the other day and just fell in love with it and thought it would be perfect to use for the B-day Bash...

Ad's are just like sketches with a little added something... You can either use it as is, flit it, turn it side ways, upside down what ever you like. You can also take the colors or elements etc from the AD. You'll get 5 points if you complete a layout...and you can earn another 2 points if you use a Dixie Pieces Digi Kit or mix a few of them together like I did in my example.

I used the DP Digi Kits "All Hallows Eve papers, embellishments , Joy in the Journey alphas & transparency and Cotton Candy flower and pin".

Are we all having fun yet? There are so many awesome challenges on here and everyone is doing a great job with them all!

We are celebrating DP's first birthday and it has been a great year! Here's to you ladies - you made the year so much fun - here's wishing us all here at DIxie Pieces many more wonderful years together.

There are a couple requirements for this challenge:

First-the pics have to be at least 10 years old! DIg out those older pictures that you have laying around and get them scrapped!

Next-your layout must have at least two pictures and they have to be cut in different shapes. So you can have one rectangle and one circle or one star and one circle - whatever combo you want!

My example:

Sorry this post did not take when I posted it earlier...not sure what's been going on with my computer...could be too many addons from visiting the Nick Jr site for all these kid games...

My challenge for you is to create a Thinking of You card.

If you complete this challenge on time you will get 5 points...if you would like 5 bonus points use at least two layers on your card....for my sample I used three layers on top of my card. The top layer is stamped with a stamp from Unity and then my oldest dd cut it out using my deckle scissors; the next layer I embossed using the Swiss Dots from Cuttlebug, the next layer is just a small matt....then there is my card base.

Your challenge for today is to take your favorite ICE CREAM flavor and be inspired be the colors!
At all of our birthday parties, we make Ice Cream Sherbert Punch so I used the colors of sherbert in this Page:

Let your imagination run wild with this one!! Maybe you like Buttered Pecan... your page could be creams and tans. You like strawberry? Do a pink page with splashes of red!
Complete this page to recieve your points and for a twist, if your page has "ICE CREAM" in the title OR a picture of someone eating Ice Cream you will receive a BONUS point!!

I've been lucky enough to be with DP since its infant days and really, we have a great group of ladies here (and I say ladies because I believe that's all we've had here - and certainly look forward to the day we have a male scrapper join the group!). We have all types - all ages, all kinds of life experiences, from all over the world. We're like a group of opposites that have been drawn together by the magnetic force of scrapbooking. Here's to the opposites! Create a LO using two main colours (you can add a third as long as it is not dominant in the LO). The two main colours must be opposites! You must also use opposite words in your title (In/out, up/down etc) 5 points for this LO.

5 extra points for creating a card with your scraps!

Have fun!

bethally on "10/24 Lace It Up! Challenge"

Here's a fun technique that adds some pizazz to your cards or pages!
Lacing ribbon, raffia... whatever is a fun embellishment to add to your projects! here's my example:

Here are some tips for completing this technique:

Step #1:Using a ruler, mark where you will punch your holes for the lacing. It can be as narrow or wide as you desire! {Mine are 1" wide and 1/2" apart vertically}

Step #2: Punch or poke your holes using a Big Bite or paper piercer, etc. The size of your holes should be determined by the size of ribbon, thread, raffia, etc that you choose to use.

Step #3: Lace your ribbon through the holes! At the end, you can tie a bow like I did or tape it off and cover with an embellishment!

I'll give you 3 points for using this technique on a card and 5 points for using it on a page! Or if you are really adventurous, do them both!! For an extra twist, I'll give you 2 bonus points if you create a Happy Birthday Card or a Birthday Page!

Procedure:

1. Paint the edges of the 6x6 cardboard, these will be our front and back covers.
2. Cut 2 6"x6" brown cs and adhere on front and back.
3. On your fabric, position your mask on it and dab paint. It will dry fairly quick as long as you dab just a thin film of paint on your fabric. Adhere centered on the cover (I used double-sided tape).
3. Cut two holes using your crop-a-dile (or big bite), you will insert the ring binders in here later.
4. Cut 4 pcs of 1" strips of floral patterned paper, use deco scissor to trim one edge, fold in pleats and adhere. Cut another 2 pcs of 1" strips from a different patterned paper and use threading water border punch on one edge. Divide into 4 1"x6" strips. Adhere on top of the deco scissored strips, as seen on the image:

5. Cut 3 1"x2" patterned paper and adhere letter thickers (A R T) and doodle around the letters with brown pen to highlight it.
6. Handwrite "journal" on a piece of cs and use foam tape to adhere it on the cover.
7. Use a journaling spot to write whatever sentiments you want seen on the cover. Adhere a floral pattern on the right side of the journaling spot and cover it slightly with two flowers as show here:

8. Now your front cover is done!
9. For the insides, I did the following:
a. I used several types of papers, mostly scraps, for the inside pages of my art journal. I wanted to make use of those pieces of papers that you would likely throw away or ignore:

b. I cut the unused part of an old folder into 6x6 size

c. Some index cards.... put a piece of paper clip with beads and an old Hambly journaling bit:

d. Cut into 4 pcs an 8.5x11 cardboard and a larger scrap of a Prima paintable:

e. Some printed paper sample from a card-making magazine and a 6x12 piece of cardstock. Adhere the bottom part only, to make a pocket:

f. Used different types of papers as shown here:

g. 3 brown envelopes adhered on top of each other and embellished with a die cut sticker to serve as a divider for my art journal. Leave the flaps open so that you can still use it for additional space or pockets:

So, there you have it!
I hope you liked my art journal and its some simple techniques incorporated in it. Thank you!

Oh, if you decide to make one, please make sure you do the following:

1. Masking on fabric
2. Handwrite a part of the title
3. Use "unscrappy" papers like notebooks pages or similar
4. Paper clips with beads
5. and envelopes

Let's say it will add a whopping 10 pts to your total pts!!

and

a random winner will have a humble RAK from me <img src="http://dixiepieces.com/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_biggrin.gif" title=":D" class="bb_smilies" />

DON'T FORGET TO leave a link in this thread for your entry to be counted (points and rak).

Have fun!!

Here's a tutorial that you can use for digital or hybrid scrapping, so I'm making it into a challenge, too! Just use this technique to combine two or more photos in your layout, and you will earn 5 points. You can combine your photos and then pring the collage to use in a hybrid layout.

BONUS: You can have 5 bonus points if you use Dixie Pieces' digital kits in your layout!

This technique is pretty simple - you make sure that each photo is on it's own layer, then you erase the parts of each photo that you don't want to see. Ready? Okay...

Making a Photo Montage

Create a new file in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. It should be large enough that you can accomodate all of your photos for the montage, so go ahead and go to File: New and make a 12 inch x 12 inch file, 300 pixels/inch resolution.

Select File: Place and then locate the first photo you would like to use. Click the Place button to add it to your layout. This will show the photo in your layout - click the commit button (looks like a checkmark) to accept it.

Repeat step 2 for all the photos you want to use. This will place a copy of each photo on it's own layer in Photoshop. Go ahead and name and save your file.
Shortcut: Type CTRL + S (Mac: Command + S)

Photoshop only: You will need to rasterize your layers to proceed, so right-click on each layer in the layers palette and choose Rasterize Layer. Photoshop Elements rasterizes the layers automatically when you use Place.

I recommend hiding all but the two layers you want to work with first. To do this, just click the "eyeball" image () next to the layer you want to hide.

You should now have two layers (or two photos) showing. Make sure that the one you want to use as a background is on the bottom of the layers paletted - if it is not, just click and drag it to the bottom.

Click on the layer containing the top photo to select it. Now, decrease the opacity of this photo to about 50% by using the Opacity slider in the upper right of the layers palette. This will enable you to see what you're doing, since you'll be able to see the background image, too.

Activate your eraser tool (click or type "e"). Choose a large, soft, round brush. You can choose a brush in the options toolbar, which is along the top of your screen.
Tip: If you hold your mouse over the brushes in the brush palette, the name of the brush will appear. I chose "Soft Round 200 pixels".

Making sure that your top image is still selected, start erasing the parts of that image which you do not want to use. As you erase, you can make your brush smaller to get the detailed areas by typing the "[" key - make it larger again with "]". You can also zoom in with CTRL + + or zoom out with CTRL + - (Mac: Command + +/Command + -).
Tip: Erase a little bit at a time, which makes it easier to undo if you don't like the way it looks. Also, the larger the brush you use, the softer the edge will be, so I try to use as large a brush as possible for this type of task.

When you are finished erasing, bring the opacity back up to 100%. You may need to touch up the erasing a bit at that point.

Once you have the photos the way you want them, you can un-hide the next photo by clicking the empty box to the left of the layer (an eye will appear). Repeat steps 7 - 10 with that photo, until you have erased all the photos to your liking.

So--ladies, the gallery is hopping with fabulous art and it is all so inspiring! We are going to play the round robin scraplift game again. The idea is to claim a spot in this thread and scraplift the one who posts above you. You can play as many times as you would like, but you must complete your first scraplift before you can claim your spot for another.

I will start by choosing someone in the gallery to scrap -----the next poster will scraplift me and the next poster will scraplift her --- You will get 5 points for a basic scraplift and an additional 5 points if you use the exact same title! Don't forget the fabulous digi kits and layouts!

Look for the other post - "10/18 Scraplift --Post your layout links here!" - we will post out links there to our scraplifts - that way we don't run into double posts in this thread and confuse who is lifting who!

You can lift as many times as you want---just need to finish one at a time! Have fun!

My challenge for you this month is to "GO BIG!!!"
Simply use a large photo on a page.... the only catch is your pic has got to be atleast an 8x10 photo
Here's My example:

Since its "back to school" time, and we equate the image of an apple with school, my challenge for you this month is to incorporate the word "Apple" into your title - Apple of my Eye, An Apple a Day, Apple for the teacher - you get the idea. Try to get creative and stretch yourself a little <img src="http://dixiepieces.com/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_wink.gif" title=";)" class="bb_smilies" />

We all have different ways to get inspiration for our layouts, cards and projects... One way I get inspiration is I take my camera along for a ride to town etc. At stop signs or lights I take photos of buildings down the road etc. I usually take about 20 to 30 photos. There is usually something that stands out in each photo. Either a color combo, a sign etc. So I want you to go out and take some photos the next time you run your errands and pick just ONE photo that has something that inspires you to do a layout. Load up the photo and the layout. The photo that inspired you to do a layout doesn't have to be on the layout although I bet you will scrap these photos. hehe

Here is a photo that I took that actually hangs in my scrap room because it's so full of inspiration and meaning for me.

Here is one of the layouts that I did from the photos inspiration.

This month I challenge you to use something for a purpose other than what it was meant for...

You can create either a card or a layout, but it must contain at least one item that is being used for a purpose other than it's original design...

Here is my example to give you an idea...

For this card I have have used the domino from the September kit as the trunk of my tree...and I cut apart and covered three of the included photo corners with pattern paper...and then stacked them ontop of one another to create this holiday tree...

I love attempting to master the white space concept. I know others struggle as well so for my challenge, I have made a "white space" sketch and challenge you to give it a try! (Yes, I know I forgot title placement but lets see some creativity!)

Hey ladies---Most of us send tons of Christmas cards out every year - and for me it is always a mad scramble in November to get them all made and ready to go---of course November is also a crazy month with plenty of other things to take care of!

So this year my goal is to make at least 10 Christmas Cards every month to help me lighten the load when December rolls around.

So your challenge is to get in the holiday spirit - just a little - and make Christmas Cards ----here is the deal - they have to be made from the same paper line. I made my 6 cards from 3 sheets of double sided paper!

Here are my samples for you:

Hey ladies - there is some FAB-U-LOUS talent in our gallery! I am always amazed and in awe of everyone's creativity! So what could be better than a scraplift challenge? This is round robin style and will work like this:

All you have to do is agree to scraplift the person above you in the forum thread. Then as soon as you have completed your lift ---go back into your ORIGINAL thread and post your layout and/or layout link and the one you lifted! Simple right?

After you have completed a lift, feel free to go to the end of the thread and sign up to scraplift someone else. REMEMBER: You are to scraplift the person above you in the thread.

--------------------------------------
POI NTS: 1 point for each lift completed and posted
--------------------------------------
RAK: I will award a RAK to the person who completes the most lifts!
--------------------------------------
POSTING YOUR ENTRIES:
--------------------------------------
You can upload your layouts here: http://dixiepieces.com/v/Closed/SummerSplash/rrScraplift/

So, since I am first and there is no one ahead of me----I am lifting our fearless leader, Sherry!

Here is the layout that I am lifting:

and the one that I did:

So - the person that posts to this thread next will scraplift me and then the following person will scraplift them and so on!

REMEMBER:

-----You must complete your scraplift and have it posted and/or linked BEFORE you can sign up to do it again!!!
-----You can "edit" your original post by clicking the edit button at the bottom of your post
-----If you would like to enter an actual photo of your work ---- upload the design to photobucket or flickr and then enter the HTML code directly into the thread.
-----To get directly to the gallery of the person you are lifting, enter their user name in to the search bar on the left of the gallery screen
-----If you are new and do not have any pages in the gallery, please upload a few before signing up to lift someone so that the person below you will have something to lift!

HAVE FUN!

This challenge is about good food of any kind - photos of it, eating it, (throwing it), your favorite, whatever! <img src="http://dixiepieces.com/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" /> The only rules are: it must be about food, and it has to be good food.
