Lacing ribbon, raffia... whatever is a fun embellishment to add to your projects! here's my example: <a href="http://s170.photobucket.com/albums/u248/bethally/?action=view&current=DSC04740.jpg"><img src="http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u248/bethally/DSC04740.jpg"></a> Here are some tips for completing this technique: Step #1:Using a ruler, mark where you will punch your holes for the lacing. It can be as narrow or wide as you desire! {Mine are 1" wide and 1/2" apart vertically} Step #2: Punch or poke your holes using a Big Bite or paper piercer, etc. The size of your holes should be determined by the size of ribbon, thread, raffia, etc that you choose to use. Step #3: Lace your ribbon through the holes! At the end, you can tie a bow like I did or tape it off and cover with an embellishment! I'll give you 3 points for using this technique on a card and 5 points for using it on a page! Or if you are really adventurous, do them both!! For an extra twist, I'll give you 2 bonus points if you create a Happy Birthday Card or a Birthday Page! I've got tons of them! Plain and altered,just to put down notes, sketches, journaling ideas and quotes that interest me.... So! Here's a very easy ART JOURNAL I am sharing with you. <img src="http://dixiepieces.com/forum/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" /> You will need these: - 2 pcs cardboard cut into 6x6 - 2 ring binders (any size) - 2 6"x6" plain cardstock (color will depend on what you want) - 4 pcs 1"x12" strips of patterned paper - 2 pcs 1"x12 strips of patterned paper (different color) - assortment of papers (from patterned papers to notebook pages to ledger pages to index papers...anything you want) - envelopes (i used 3 pcs coin envelopes, 3 3/4 x 5 7/8) - 4x6 plain fabric - paint - mask - 2 flowers - paper clips - beads - journaling spots - patterned papers and cardstocks (i used mostly strips and scraps) - approx. 8 inches ribbon and 4 inches lace trim - pens - crop-a-dile or similar tool - threading water punch and deco scissors (or any design you like) - word diecut stickers - thickers - adhesives (glue and double-sided tapes) to make this: <a href="http://s218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/?action=view&current=cover-1.jpg"><img src="http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/cover-1.jpg"></a> Procedure: 1. Paint the edges of the 6x6 cardboard, these will be our front and back covers. 2. Cut 2 6"x6" brown cs and adhere on front and back. 3. On your fabric, position your mask on it and dab paint. It will dry fairly quick as long as you dab just a thin film of paint on your fabric. Adhere centered on the cover (I used double-sided tape). 3. Cut two holes using your crop-a-dile (or big bite), you will insert the ring binders in here later. 4. Cut 4 pcs of 1" strips of floral patterned paper, use deco scissor to trim one edge, fold in pleats and adhere. Cut another 2 pcs of 1" strips from a different patterned paper and use threading water border punch on one edge. Divide into 4 1"x6" strips. Adhere on top of the deco scissored strips, as seen on the image: <a href="http://s218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/?action=view&current=cover_b-1.jpg"><img src="http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/cover_b-1.jpg"></a> 5. Handwrite "journal" on a piece of cs and use foam tape to adhere it on the cover. 7. Use a journaling spot to write whatever sentiments you want seen on the cover. Now your front cover is done! 9. For the insides, I did the following: a. I used several types of papers, mostly scraps, for the inside pages of my art journal. I cut the unused part of an old folder into 6x6 size <a href="http://s218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/?action=view&current=open_1-1.jpg"><img src="http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/open_1-1.jpg"></a> c. Some index cards.... put a piece of paper clip with beads and an old Hambly journaling bit: <a href="http://s218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/?action=view&current=open_2-1.jpg"><img src="http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/open_2-1.jpg"></a> d. Cut into 4 pcs an 8.5x11 cardboard and a larger scrap of a Prima paintable: <a href="http://s218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/?action=view&current=open_3-1.jpg"><img src="http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/open_3-1.jpg"></a> e. Some printed paper sample from a card-making magazine and a 6x12 piece of cardstock. Adhere the bottom part only, to make a pocket: <a href="http://s218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/?action=view&current=open_4-1.jpg"><img src="http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/open_4-1.jpg"></a> f. Used different types of papers as shown here: <a href="http://s218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/?action=view&current=open_6-2.jpg"><img src="http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc161/scrappydonna/open_6-2.jpg"></a> g. 3 brown envelopes adhered on top of each other and embellished with a die cut sticker to serve as a divider for my art journal. Just use this technique to combine two or more photos in your layout, and you will earn 5 points. You can combine your photos and then pring the collage to use in a hybrid layout. BONUS: You can have 5 bonus points if you use Dixie Pieces' digital kits in your layout! This technique is pretty simple - you make sure that each photo is on it's own layer, then you erase the parts of each photo that you don't want to see. Ready? Okay... Making a Photo Montage <ol> <li>Create a new file in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. It should be large enough that you can accomodate all of your photos for the montage, so go ahead and go to File: New and make a 12 inch x 12 inch file, 300 pixels/inch resolution. <img src="/images/tutorials/08.08.01-CropClass-04.jpg" /></li> <li>Select File: Place and then locate the first photo you would like to use. Click the Place button to add it to your layout. This will show the photo in your layout - click the commit button (looks like a checkmark<img src="/images/tutorials/08.08.01-CropClass-51.jpg" />) to accept it.</li> <li>Repeat step 2 for all the photos you want to use. This will place a copy of each photo on it's own layer in Photoshop. Go ahead and name and save your file. Shortcut: Type CTRL + S (Mac: Command + S)</li> <li>Photoshop only: You will need to rasterize your layers to proceed, so right-click on each layer in the layers palette and choose Rasterize Layer. Photoshop Elements rasterizes the layers automatically when you use Place.</li> <li>I recommend hiding all but the two layers you want to work with first. To do this, just click the "eyeball" image (<img src="/images/tutorials/08.08.01-CropClass-16.jpg" />) next to the layer you want to hide.</li> <li>You should now have two layers (or two photos) showing. Make sure that the one you want to use as a background is on the bottom of the layers paletted - if it is not, just click and drag it to the bottom. <img src="/images/tutorials/08.10.28-Collage-02.jpg" /></li> <li>Click on the layer containing the top photo to select it. Now, decrease the opacity of this photo to about 50% by using the Opacity slider in the upper right of the layers palette. This will enable you to see what you're doing, since you'll be able to see the background image, too. <img src="/images/tutorials/08.10.28-Collage-03.jpg" /></li> <li>Activate your eraser tool (click <img src="/images/tutorials/commonEraserTool.gif" /> or type "e"). Choose a large, soft, round brush. You can choose a brush in the options toolbar, which is along the top of your screen. Tip: If you hold your mouse over the brushes in the brush palette, the name of the brush will appear. I chose "Soft Round 200 pixels". <img src="/images/tutorials/08.10.28-Collage-04.jpg" /></li> <li>Making sure that your top image is still selected, start erasing the parts of that image which you do not want to use. As you erase, you can make your brush smaller to get the detailed areas by typing the "[" key - make it larger again with "]". You can also zoom in with CTRL + + or zoom out with CTRL + - (Mac: Command + +/Command + -). Tip: Erase a little bit at a time, which makes it easier to undo if you don't like the way it looks. Also, the larger the brush you use, the softer the edge will be, so I try to use as large a brush as possible for this type of task. <img src="/images/tutorials/08.10.28-Collage-05.jpg" /></li> <li>When you are finished erasing, bring the opacity back up to 100%. You may need to touch up the erasing a bit at that point.</li> </ol> Once you have the photos the way you want them, you can un-hide the next photo by clicking the empty box to the left of the layer (an eye will appear). One way I get inspiration is I take my camera along for a ride to town etc. At stop signs or lights I take photos of buildings down the road etc. I usually take about 20 to 30 photos. There is usually something that stands out in each photo. Either a color combo, a sign etc. So I want you to go out and take some photos the next time you run your errands and pick just ONE photo that has something that inspires you to do a layout. Load up the photo and the layout.
