A friend of mine and her husband recently adopted the most precious one month old little girl. (They have a 2 yr old adopted son.) They received her days before Christmas and were able to celebrate the holiday with her. They paid all of the legal fees, even the birth mom's rent. The birth mom is thirteen and isn't even sure who the father is. It is just a horrible situation. WA has no time restraint on when the birth mother can revoke the parental rights of the adopted parents. My friend found out that she has done just that and the birth mother was coming to pic up the baby earlier this evening. CPS will be stepping in in the very near future to remove the baby from the birth mother as they feel she is not a fit mother, does not have enough support and is not capable of living on her own and being a mother at 13. (Who would be!) (The birth mother's mother is nowhere to be found and the grandma of the birth mother (a great grandma in her 40's) can only do so much) SO this baby will be introduced to foster care very soon and likely remain it in for a very very long time. In the mean time my friend and her family are left grieving for a beautiful baby they love with all their hearts. If you're someone who believes in the power of prayer please keep all of these people in mind. I am sitting here in tears not being able to imagine the pain my friend and her family is in. I know I will be thinking of them every minute of every day for the next while.

I'm so sorry to hear that!! I can understand the birth parents have the right to change their mind in the beginning, but to have no time restraint?? That's just crazy! Also, I can not for the life of me understand why the baby has to be taken into foster care and not being handed over to your friend again?? That would be in the best interest of the child, with a familiar surrounding!

Oh my...Heln said it. Why put a child in foster care when a loving family can do the job. I just saw today a child had a baby at 11 in NY...I just don't get it.

I agree with Helen, and it was the same thing I was thinking. Why does the baby have to go back into foster care once it is removed from its mother, why not go back to the family.

Mimi - my husband just told me about the 11 year old. I really don't understand that at all....
I was thinking too - their must be some sort of legal recourse this family can take - after all - they did adopt the child and they are now the "parents" of this baby according to the birth certificate and they have not violated the law. I just don't see how this child could be put into foster care but then again, I usually live in a fairy tale world.....

I am so sorry that your friend is going through this. I really hope that there's something that can be done to keep that baby from being moved into foster care. Many prayers for your friend and that precious baby.

This is just an awful situation. Sometimes I just don't get this whole system. There are parents cleared, ready to love and raise this sweet baby and the state rather place her in foster care after all this? Ugh this is rdiculous. I will pray for your friend to be reunited with the baby that really should belong to her. SO sorry to hear this news.

My friend and her DH had considered becoming foster-to-adopt parents before they decided to adopt a second time. They decided not to because they didn't want to put themselves in the position of fostering first because the baby could be taken away. Ironic.

I wonder if a 13 year old can legally care for a child?
I still feel nervous leaving my 3 year old with her 13 year old brother for an hour or two....

That is really so sad - and shows that the entire system needs restructuring. I agree that if the baby is being taken away from the mother anyway, why not let the same couple take care of her. And, no - a 13 year old cannot take care of a baby properly. A 13 year old almost still needs a babysitter herself!!
I don't even want to think about the 11 year old - that is ridiculous. It makes you wonder what kind of homelife that child has and what moral values (if any) did her parents try to teach her. I know you can't blame everything on the parents - but I can't help thinking that if they had done their job a little better this wouldn't have happened.....
